So you think you want a Bull Terrier?
The Question is not is a Bull Terrier the right dog for you, more are you the right human worthy of a Bull Terrier?
Could you just stand back shake your head and laugh when 'Rover' has just chewed his way through your furnishings and then had a bullie run - just for good measure?
If you are house-proud and don't want things ending up broken/chewed, slobber and a fine layer of fur everywhere - a Bull Terrier is not for you. Bull Terriers, lets not forget, are Terriers and do like to dig. Is your perfectly manicured lawn ready for such punishment?
It is also surprising just how high a Bull Terrier can jump, and how hard they can 'bash'. Have you high secure fencing/walling all around your property?
When taking your 'tank' for a walk are you prepared for squirrels, birds, other dogs as well as cats taking attention away from your (sort of) obedient dog? As far as obedience goes, expecting little is the best option with a Bull Terrier - they're not Border Collies after all.
Bull Terriers are athletic dogs who need quite a lot of exercising to keep them in shape, a few hours a couple of times a day is the least they would expect. They are also dogs that do not cope well with being on their own. If you work all day or are out for long periods, for the dogs sake, do not think of owning one; adopt a rescue dog that cannot be re-homed via monthly donations .
Bull Terriers are one of the worlds biggest lap-dogs, though they are clumsy and during cuddles they may accidentally 'bump' you with their head - though this really does hurt - it is not intended.
Bull Terriers are well loved by most, but the wrong attitude of a sole individual will reflect on the whole Bull Terrier community. Are you prepared for the uninformed with their scathing comments and are you ready help educate about the breed to those who are certain the dog is a threat to 'Foo-Foo'?
Possessing the right attitude is essential for the breed. If you want a guard dog - install a better alarm. If you want something to make you look 'tough', look elsewhere - Bull Terriers are dogs whose purpose is to love you as much as you love them, and amuse you to boot. Don't let the frowning attitude of the media to Bull Terriers grow.
Bull Terriers are excellent Aunts and Uncles for the children of the family and beyond. No breed of dog should ever be left alone with a child. However, small children are fragile and can be accidentally bumped. Bull Terriers are overgrown pups and will play happily with children and tolerate play from youngsters easily.
